Hello Everyone - News Update...June 2011

I have been transitioning with the launch of my new media marketing and consulting company, LIBERO MEDIA Productions (if you are seeking better exposure for your business online, contact me) writing two books (one fiction and one non-fiction) and spending time with family.

After a bit of a summer hiatus with my radio show, I plan to return with it in a whole new form with the show moving into video and being retitled to "VISIONARY ENTERTAINMENT" with some very exciting programs coming up. The "2001" show will be a part of this new season too.

Our program today starts with a book I was sent by a friend which I just fell in love with and I thought I would share it with all of you. So today we are going to meet and explore the life of an award winning journalist, author, and TV host who had her life turned upside down following an incredible near death experience and the miraculous events that followed…

Hazel Courteney was the UK's first alternative health advice columnist in the Daily Mail, and later for The Sunday Times, and soon became an acknowledged expert on health and metaphysical issues. In 1998, she underwent a near death experience that triggered huge amounts of paranormal phenomena to occur in her presence. She tells this incredible story in her books "Divine Intervention" and the sequel, "The Evidence for the Sixth Sense".

When her near death experience happened, some of the fantastic subjects she was writing about became real life experiences. My guest today is Pen Densham, writer, producer, director - whose work I have a tremendous respect and admiration for, and who has authored one of the finest books on the subject of writing for films I have ever had the pleasure to read.

“Riding the Alligator” is a deep and personal journeying into the heart of an artist whose passion for writing can be felt on every page. It’s a thought provoking, inspirational, and practical guide for both the established and aspiring screenwriter, beginning with where to get great story ideas all the way through to when you know you are done with the script. It is filled with a great deal of wisdom of how to handle the ‘alligator’ of the motion picture business in addition to motivational gems of how to trust your creative instincts and maintain your sanity.

In 1985, Densham, John Watson and Richard Barton Lewis formed Trilogy Entertainment Group, and the trio produced the hit films "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" with Kevin Costner (also writing the script), and "Backdraft", directed by Ron Howard. They were also employed as creative consultants on films such as “Rocky II”, and “Footloose”. Pen brought back the anthology sci-fi series “The Outer Limits” in 1995 on Showtime and “The Twilight Zone” series on UPN in 2003, and served as Executive Producer on both. He wrote and directed “Moll Flanders”, starring Robin Wright and Morgan Freeman and TNT’s “Houdini”. He also serves an adjunct professor at USC in Los Angeles.

I recently got to know the writings of Brent Marchant, whom I feel in his book “Get the Picture”, has written the definitive work on movies that relate to the evolvement and current relevancy of the medium of motion pictures in this era of visionary entertainment.

I am grateful to recommend such a fine work of literary journalism to anyone who wants to explore the art of the story in films and apply it to the process of spiritual awakening in their own lives. In the annals of film essayists, Brent ranks up there with the best in my book; going as far back as James Agee; along with Robert Schickel, Pauline Kael, and Leonard Maltin – but relating films and their meaning and importance in a way that no previous writer has done ever before.

As I have written in early essays myself, films reflect social and cultural trends and society’s underpinnings. Many authors, journalists, and critics have acknowledged this aspect of movies, and even spoke of their nature as a primary mythical force concealed as an art form that has the power to shape societal trends – in addition to mass human consciousness. They affect the choices we make and how we see ourselves and even show us potential futures we can choose from to create and then live in.

Brent has done a marvelous job of creating a very comprehensive compendium of the finest examples of visionary films in the last 75 years in his book, and continues to follow new films with great wit and insight in the “conscious creation” genre through ongoing reviews.

Now in its tenth year, with offices in New York, North Carolina and London, Working Films has partnered or collaborated on audience and community engagement and non-traditional distribution efforts with celebrated documentary campaigns, including Dirty Business, Freedom Riders, Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, Everything’s Cool, Moving to Mars, Erasing David, Age of Stupid, No Impact Man and many others. West has presented case studies and highlights of Working Films’ successes at the Sundance Film Festival, at the Center for Social Media at American University, at Channel 4 BritDoc’s Media Conference, at Sheffield’s Doc/Fest and other venues.

The organization operates in several ways, helping about 50 films and filmmakers a year through filmmaker residencies and what West calls "non-traditional public relations" such as connecting the film to audiences through the use of social media tools.

Working Films researchers the issues involved in their movies, finds out what non-profits are working on them, then helps the filmmaker find target audiences, the right setting for screenings, how the documentary can be tied into policy issues. I would say Mr. West and his organization has the answer to every nonfiction filmmaker's audience member who after watching the film asks the question, "What can I do?"

9500 Liberty is a new documentary that reflects the complexities and deep seated concerns about immigration in the United States through the story of one country in Northern Virginia.

In July of 2007, Prince William County, Virginia became ground zero in America’s explosive battle over immigration policy when elected officials adopted a law requiring police officers to question anyone they thought was “probably” undocumented.

Filmmakers Annabel Park and Eric Byler began documenting events in Prince William County on the web through You Tube videos and interactive blogs and then found themselves playing a role in a battle that shifted back and forth between the Internet and real life events. The web documentarians were then invited by the Washington Post and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to speak up about what they saw was happening and how people were reacting on both sides of this very heated issue.

9500 Liberty reveals the startling vulnerability of a local government targeted by national anti-immigration networks using the internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial division, residents form a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual townhalls, setting up a real life showdown in the seat of county government. The devastating social and economic impact of the “Immigration Resolution” is felt in the lives of real people in homes and in local businesses. I am joined by social media expert Bardi Toto, who, when I first had a conversation with her several days ago, surprised me with so many ideas on social media I had never heard of before!

The buzz these days is all about how to use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, and the how to of using these sites in some sort of magical way (with great ease) to promote you and your business and get RESULTS.

Yet there is a larger, and I think more important aspect about the use of social media with an objective of doing something meaningful with it. In my September 6th blog post, I brought up these points:

All media gets digitized, the Internet also becomes the mode of carriage for ALL other media.

Former members of the audience can now also be producers, and not just consumers.

All that means WE ALL have a voice, and that voice can be heard by EVERYONE and EVERYWHERE.

There is a young generation alive today that has grown up in a technological multimedia culture unprecedented since the birth of the arts. They have at their fingertips incredible creative tools that have the power to positively shape culture and future generations. This foundation of information in the Digital Age can show the current younger generations how to use media and the tools of technology to create a brighter future for all. It is up to us how wisely we can use these tools and not just look at short term personal gain.

With the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 just wrapped in Las Vegas, I thought this would be a good opportunity to explore recent technological developments and their implications for the future for the motion picture / video production industries.

I am joined by James Mathers, president and co-founder of the nonprofit educational cooperative The Digital Cinema Society, who has been a director of photography on more than 35 films (including one of my recent favorite documentaries The U.S. vs. John Lennon) and several TV series. James began his career as a child actor alongside greats such as Henry Fonda and Buddy Ebsen and specializes in shooting filmstyle digital.

We had an amazing time shooting the pilot video program in Hollywood and got an incredible interview with Vince Pace, Director of Photography on AVATAR and the genius, along with James Cameron, on the pioneering use of the new 3D technology that is now blowing away audiences all over the world who are seeing the film in the 3D format.

"The End of Poverty(?)" with director Philipe Diaz (12/9/2009)

The End of Poverty? is a daring, thought-provoking and very timely documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Philippe Diaz and narrated by actor Martin Sheen, that poses a powerful question:

Why, in a world with so much wealth, do we still have so much poverty, where billions of people live on less than one dollar a day?

The film reveals that poverty is not an accident. It began 500 years ago with the colonization of the New World by military conquest, slavery and seizure of land, minerals and forced labor. Today, global poverty has reached new levels because of unfair debt, trade and tax policies -- in other words, wealthy countries exploiting the weaknesses of poor, developing countries. The word “sustainability” gets tossed around a lot these days.

I would say if you want to truly understand what the word sustainability really means and its global and personal implications, then The End of Poverty? is the movie to see. This is a film which should be shown to every high school age child across the country, because it is in their lifetime that this global situation will have to be addressed.

John Perkins, author “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”speaks on the American Empire.

The film offers a few specific policy changes that are needed to end poverty:
1) cancel debts, 2) create fairer trade arrangements, 3) impose taxes on wealth, not consumption of necessities, 4) end privatization of natural resources, 5) develop land reform that shares land, or its value, among the actual producers of farm products, and 6) initiate programs of de-growth in the North, to reduce wasteful consumption.

Yet solutions must go much deeper than any set of specific policies. The process of overcoming 500 years of oppression on a global scale cannot be reversed without a deep transformation of institutions. Even if the World Bank and the IMF adopted new priorities tomorrow, if debts were cancelled, and fair trade policies were implemented (though all of that would help), the legacy of domination would not suddenly come to an end.

For that reason, the film asks viewers to ponder the changes our lives must undergo in the North for us finally to take responsibility for the ongoing impoverishment of the South.

"Ironically, in the last year our movie has become the film to explain the current economic crisis while touring the festivals. The Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival, selected the film when it was not even finished which started an international festival tour that has passed the 25 mark and is still counting. We’ve been invited around the world to present the film and explain why we have to change our understanding and our perception of poor people and of poverty. Because at the end of the day, as long as we remain rich, they will remain poor and we’ll keep digging the gigantic hole under our feet. Which one day, without a doubt, will swallow us all. But we have to hope that we are more intelligent than to let that happen."

Here, Clay Shirkey discusses the transformed media landscape, and what it means to anybody who has a message they want to get out, to anywhere in the world. Media has become increasingly “social” and we’re increasingly realizing that we’re all in this together. The generation we’re now in, has the largest expressive capability in human history.

There have only been four periods in the last 500 years where media changed enough that could be considered truly revolutionary:

1. The printing press, which made mass printing possible
2. Real-time, two-way communication: first the telegraph, then the telephone
3. Recorded media, other than print: first photos, followed by recorded sound and movies
4. Radio and television

However, the media that was good at creating conversations was not good at creating groups, and the media that was good at creating social groups was not good at creating conversations…

That has all changed and those limitations no longer exist.

The Internet is the first media in history that has native support for groups and conversation at the same time.

The second major change is that as all media gets digitized, the Internet also becomes the mode of carriage for ALL other media.

The third major change is that former members of the audience can now also be producers, and not just consumers.

All that means WE ALL have a voice, and that voice can be heard by EVERYONE and EVERYWHERE.

JESUS IN INDIA is producer-director Paul Davids' 5th feature film and a daring quest to unravel the mysteries of Jesus’ Lost Years (or “Hidden Years”) from age 12 to 30, which are not documented in the Bible. It explores the legends, myths, and actual evidence that Jesus’ Hidden Years were partially spent in India.

In April 2004, I personally met Edward T. Martin at a film conference and he gave me a copy of his book, King of Travelers: Jesus’ Lost Years in India”. There was something special about Ed, an adventurer and mountain climber whose amazing account of traveling through India, Tibet, and remote places in search of an answer of what happened in Jesus’ early life, a span of time in The New Testament that is explained only as a single brief sentence. It wasn’t long after that Paul Davids saw too that Ed Martin’s story was a riveting and visionary tale that seized the imagination. Paul decided to produce and direct JESUS IN INDIA after reading Edward Martin’s book and also studying the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda about Jesus’ purported travels to India.

Paul Davids (seen at left) traveled with Ed Martin, co-producer Anil Kumar Urmil and a dedicated crew of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians embarking on an extraordinary journey across thousands of miles and several countries around the globe to film the most comprehensive feature documentary on this subject ever made.

Their adventure took them to a 2,500 year old Hindu temple in Puri, India (seen at left) and an interview with the spiritual leader of millions of Hindus, who insists that Jesus was in India and the ancient temple of Jagannath as well as in Kashmir. He states that the facts about this have been concealed, covered up, and denied by Christianity, and that Jesus learned from the Hindus the Achar Samhita -- their code of conduct. The stories that Jesus also visited Kashmir imply that he was not only in India during the so-called “Lost Years” -- his early teens and 20s -- but that he survived the crucifixion and a few years after returned to India, where he died of old age and is buried at the Rozabal (the Prophet’s Tomb) in Kashmir.

Best Friends, Special Effects, and Digital Magic with Pony R. Horton (3/25/2009)

This week I am joined by my best friend on the planet, Pony R. Horton, whom I have known for more than 30 years. Pony is the most multi-talented person I have ever met: a visual effects artist, director, editor, cinematographer, painter, journalist, animator, photographer, screenwriter, IMAX projectionist, graphic designer, actor, bullwhip artist, and the list goes on. Pony has worked in visual effects for some of the greats, like Van der Veer Photo Effects and Roger Corman, and recently has joined the Star Trek: Phase 2 post-production team working on the episode for "Blood and Fire." It blows me away what he can do given a little time.

A remarkable and truly inspirational film that speaks to the common bond we all share as human beings from our most ancient beginnings as we awaken together to change the dream for our collective future. It's an extraordinary experience.

With breathtaking cinematography, the story follows the Aborginal tribe of the Mirning in Australia on a powerful journey, assisted by indigenous elders from around the world, to reconnect with their Sacred Earth and their spirit animals, the whales.

For director Kim Kindersley (third from right in photo), the film was more than 10 years in the making and culminated in 1998, as 85 tribal elders from around the world came together at Whale Rock in South Australia to share their traditions, stories, and spirituality over a seven-day celebration of cultures and nature. Intertwining incredible underwater footage with ancient legend, Whaledreamers examines the complex past and the possibly dire future of human civilization.

Personally, I must say that Whaledreamers is a rare and magical film that goes beyond its medium to become a deeply touching and moving experiential film that can be felt on a profound level.

This week is another program about my favorite part of making films – writing the story and screenplay. So all of you aspiring screenwriters – this show is for you. My special guest is Ray Morton, a writer, author, script consultant, and story analyst, who is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and The American Film Institute.

Ray is a senior writer for SCRIPT magazine, and pens the "Meet the Reader and "Legends of Screenwriting" columns. He has also written or co-written a number of produced teleplays and served as a Story Consultant on Showtime's groundbreaking sitcom BROTHERS. As a story analyst, he has read, synopsized, and evaluated feature film screenplays and teleplays for companies such as Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Pandora Cinema, and Castle Rock Entertainment.

As a script consultant, he has read and analyzed scripts for major studios, production companies, and independent producers, as well as for Final Draft's ScriptXpert service.

“Bloodline” is a documentary into the so-called ‘bloodline conspiracy” that claims Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene, who escaped to the south of France following his crucifixion, with their child. The movie follows a three year investigation into what some believe is the greatest cover up of all time, a story made popular by The Da Vinci Code. The film uncovers new evidence, including artifacts and a mummified corpse and takes us deep into the mysterious and dangerous world of the secret society known as the Priory of Sion, which is said to be behind it all.

Bruce says, "this is my raw, personal journey to get closer to the truth about a subject that has huge implications for us all". Michael Horn and Jack Gerlach's film The Silent Revolution of Truth is a fascinating and remarkable true-life biographical examination of UFO contactee “Billy” Eduard Albert Meier, who has managed to photograph the best evidence ever of extraterrestrial craft. This famous case has images and film that are so convincing that the best skeptics have not been able to duplicate them -- or disprove them.

The film shows a great deal of the startling highly detailed UFO photography, videos, multi-toned sound recordings, all extremely convincing even by modern Hollywood special effects standards. Yet what is more compelling is the biography of Meier himself, which tells how a five year old Swiss boy’s meetings with extraterrestrials would lead him later in life through dozens of countries meeting many famous world leaders, and ultimately becoming a spiritual emissary for Universal Teachings given by his otherworldly friends.

On a personal note, while watching this film, I found myself reevaluating many of my long held personal beliefs about the entire UFO phenomenon and even my understanding of certain religious teachings. If one accepts the Meier case as completely true without doubt, then the knowledge and prophecies given by the extraterrestrial visitors contain profound implications for humanity and an urgent warning for our future.

If you have never seen or heard anything about this story, I urge you to see this film and make your own decisions. I know it will change your views on the nature of personal reality and the Divine Plan speaking to us through the Universe.

We begin the Spring of 2008 with my first filmmaker profile, William Gazecki, whose amazing and diverse career speaks for itself. On his website, William Gazecki has written, "I am bringing to the surface something which does not have a voice."

William Gazecki’s career in the entertainment business spans three decades; after being a talented record producer earning Gold and Platinum Record Albums for Bette Midler's The Rose, The Doors' Alive She Cried and The Doors' Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and a successful career in sound mixing for TV and film; earning three Emmy nominations (two for Hill Street Blues and one for the mini-series, Foxfire) and his first Emmy win for St. Elsewhere, he turned to documentary filmmaking. William earned an Academy Award nomination and a second Emmy win for his first feature documentary, WACO: The Rules of Engagement. This week my guest is Joyce Riley, whose documentary, Beyond Treason, shows that Department of Defense documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act expose the horrific underworld of the disposable army mentality and how government funded experimentation on U.S. citizens has been conducted without their knowledge or consent.
